A Letter from the Executive Officer:

    Hi Everyone -

Hope your summer is busy and happy!!

E&M has completed the new membership directory and a copy is currently on its way to your door.

We also have a digital copy available on our website

We have also updated the HBA's Electronic Directory. After feedback from several members about the difficulty using the member search, we have broken the directory into two separate directories - Builders and Associates. If I.M. Consumer is looking for a builder or a plumber, there will be less names to look through to find the person they need.

We would still like to make the search engine simpler - which will require help from our members. Please take a look at the directories - see how you are listed and let us know how we can better promote your business.

I know this is your busiest time of year - but if you can spare a few minutes to check the online directory and drop a couple of notes my way, I would be very grateful.

Thanks for all you do for the building industry! And for Carteret County!

He was a star football player at Eastern Alamance High School and moved to Morehead City his senior year. Rocky met his love, Hope Oglesby, shortly after moving to Morehead City, and they were married in April of 1986.

Rocky and Hope were happily married for 31 years, and you would always find them together. He cherished playing with his granddaughter, Elizabeth. Rocky had a big heart, a big smile and was loved by all who met him.

Rocky is survived by his wife, Hope Oglesby Gentry; daughter, Krista Gentry Boyette and husband Daniel; son, Gunnar Gentry; granddaughter, Elizabeth Boyette; mother, Patsy Vereen; brother, Ricky Gentry; and sister, Rhonda Gentry.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roscoe Merritte Gentry.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Take a Kid Fishing Foundation, P.O. Box 1191, Morehead City, N.C. 28557.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 — making this a good time to get a jump on things and prepare your home for any extreme weather that may come.

Regardless of the weather, if you follow these tips you’ll head into summer having finished some home maintenance that you’d want to have done anyway. And in case there is a storm, you’ll have what you need to batten down your house and be ready for contingencies.

First, inspect your rain gutters and downspouts. Make sure they are well secured to the house and clear of leaves and other obstructions.

Check that trees are trimmed. Remove damaged limbs and trees to prevent them being blown off and causing damage during a storm.

Protect your windows and any glass in doors. Reinforcing exterior glass against a hurricane isn't primarily to prevent shards of broken glass from spewing into the home. The far more serious danger is that once wind or flying debris breaks a window or takes off a door, the sudden change in pressure inside the house could blow the roof off or cause other major damage.

Commercial storm shutters or 5/8-inch plywood properly secured over all exterior glass is your best bet to keep out the wind. Storm shutters come in a variety of materials and looks, including transparent ones that protect windows while leaving a view. If you choose plywood, secure it using long screws and the proper anchors for your wall material. Or, better yet, if your windows are inset a couple of inches, install the plywood inside the frame — the inset makes it harder for wind to get under the wood and blow it off — and secure it with barrel bolts that slide into holes drilled into the side of the inset.

Keep a battery-operated radio and extra batteries — or even a hand-crank radio so that you can follow weather reports and alerts. A battery-operated charger for your cell phone can also keep you in communication if you lose electric power.

Learn about your area’s evacuation routes and have a plan for a place to stay if you need to evacuate. Make a plan for what you’ll do with your pets. Create a “go bag” with necessary medications, a first-aid kit, maps, and copies of important papers.

For more information on hurricane safety in Eastern NC, contact Teri Edwards at carterethba@earthlink.net.
